About Extended Producer Responsibility

Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) is an environmentally oriented concept that makes manufacturers responsible for the environmental impact of their products over their entire life cycle. This means that companies are not only responsible for the manufacture and sale of their products, but also for their disposal and potential environmental impacts after use. EPR programs can be introduced by governments and often include the definition of take-back obligations, recycling quotas and the financial participation of manufacturers in the collection, recycling or disposal of their products.

About EPR Registration tools

When an EPR system is introduced, the companies need to register with the system and submit the quantities of packaging that was produced. Usually digital systems called "EPR registration tools" are used for this.

About the GIZ open source EPR registration tool

As part of the Federal Environment Ministry's Environmental Protection Export Initiative, the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) has commissioned the IT agency Ambient to develop a digital registration tool for Producer Responsibility Organizations (PROs). The tool, based on the principle of producer responsibility (EPR system), enables companies to easily register and report the materials and quantities they place on the market. This is done in a secure and transparent data exchange. Manufacturers find out immediately in which period they have to pay which fees.

The tool is open source and should be considered as basis, which PROs can use to further develop the individual functionalities required in their respective EPR.
